What Nagira Means

Palm-shaded lawn and mature trees in the gardens at Nagira Tranquility

Nagira is a Maasai word for a cool, tranquil place. It is also the maiden name of the mother of our founder, Maushe Kidundo, which is how a hotel in Kitumweni Village came to carry it. The name was chosen before the gardens were planted and before the first of the thirteen units went up, and it set the brief for everything that followed: shade, quiet, and somewhere to sit down. Nagira Tranquility opened on 1 September 2026 in Bomeni Ward, Taveta, in Taita-Taveta County, Kenya. The grounds sit between Lake Chala, about 12 km away, and Lake Jipe, about 6 km away, under mature palms kept green through the dry season, with Kilimanjaro visible on a clear morning and Tsavo West National Park close enough for a day out. Thirteen self-contained rooms and cottages are spread through those gardens rather than stacked into a block. The word came first. The place was built to deserve it.

Guests ask about the name more than anything else on the property, usually somewhere between checking in and finding their door. It is a fair question. Nagira is not a word most visitors arrive knowing.

A Maasai word, and a family one

In Maasai, nagira describes a cool place — somewhere shaded and still, the kind of spot you stop at rather than pass through. It carries the sense of relief that comes with stepping out of the sun.

It is also a family name. Our founder, Maushe Kidundo, put it plainly:

“Nagira is a Maasai word meaning a cool place — tranquil. It also happens to be my mother’s maiden name. Both the name and the place inspired Nagira Tranquility to be.”
Maushe Kidundo, Founder

Why it set the brief

Naming a place before building it is a useful constraint. Once the word is tranquility, a decision like where to put the rooms stops being about how many you can fit.

So the thirteen units are spread through the gardens rather than stacked into a block. Each one opens onto green instead of a corridor, and each is self-contained, with its own bathroom and its own kitchen or kitchenette.

The lawns are kept green through the dry season and the footpaths wander instead of cutting straight lines. The grounds were not designed to impress anyone. They were left to do what gardens do: slow you down.

Where the name sits

Nagira Tranquility is in Kitumweni Village, Mboghoni Sub-location, Bomeni Ward, in Taveta, Taita-Taveta County. Lake Jipe is about 6 km away and Lake Chala about 12 km. Tsavo West National Park is close enough for a day out, and the Tanzanian border at Holili is a short drive west, with Kilimanjaro over your shoulder on a clear day.

It is a quiet corner of Kenya that most people drive past on their way somewhere louder. The name was always an argument for stopping.
