Nagira Tranquility is in Kitumweni Village, Bomeni Ward, in Taveta, Taita-Taveta County, Kenya. From Nairobi the drive takes about six hours, down the Mombasa road and inland at Voi. From Mombasa it is about four hours, and from Voi itself about an hour and a half. Voi is the natural halfway stop on the run down from Nairobi. The route is tarmac the whole way except the final kilometre, which is murram, and a saloon car handles all of it — there is no need to hire anything with higher clearance. There is no bus service to Taveta, so guests drive. Three turns take you off the A6 to the gate: search the plus code 6G8VHMHP+V6 in Google Maps, or call and we will talk you in. Check-in is from 12:00 PM, and arriving after dark is no problem if the day runs long.
Taveta sits in the far south-west corner of Kenya, between Tsavo West and the Tanzanian border. It is not on the way to anywhere, which is rather the point, but it does mean the first question every guest asks is how long the drive actually takes.
These are our own times, driven regularly, rather than what a mapping app predicts on an empty road.
How long is the drive from Nairobi?
About six hours, going down the Mombasa road and turning inland at Voi.
Voi is the natural halfway marker and a sensible place to stop, stretch and eat before the last leg. Set off early and you will reach us in daylight with the afternoon still ahead of you.
What about from Mombasa or Voi?
From Mombasa, about four hours. From Voi, about an hour and a half.
If you are already working your way through Tsavo, Taveta is a short hop rather than a detour, which is why a lot of guests arrive here at the end of a safari rather than the start of one.
Do I need a four-wheel drive?
No. The road is tarmac the whole way from Nairobi, Mombasa or Voi, and only the last kilometre to the gate is murram.
A saloon car handles that final stretch without trouble. There is no reason to hire something with higher clearance purely to reach us.
Is there a bus to Taveta?
No. There is no bus service here, so guests drive. It is worth planning around rather than discovering late.
Having a car with you is also worth it once you are here. Lake Jipe is about 6 km away, Lake Chala about 12 km, and Tsavo West is close enough for a day out — all of which are easier to reach under your own steam.
The last three turns
Once you leave the A6 it is three turns, and the schematic below is the order of them rather than their true spacing — at real scale the junctions are almost invisible on a map.
Leave the A6 at the D537 junction beside Taveta Primary School, follow the D537 south, turn east past Msheghesheni Primary School, then south to Nagira Tranquility.
Can I arrive after dark?
Yes. Arriving after dark is no problem, and plenty of guests do after a long day on the road.
Check-in is from 12:00 PM with no cut-off at the other end, so if the drive takes longer than you planned, it costs you nothing but the view on the way in. Message us when you are close and we will be expecting you.
If you get lost
Search the plus code 6G8VHMHP+V6 in Google Maps and it will put you on the gate rather than somewhere approximate in the village.
Failing that, call or message us on WhatsApp at +254 734 675 868 and we will talk you in. It happens often enough that nobody minds.
